On November 3rd, the AETC and Columbia University, in collaboration with Frederiksted Health Care Social and Community Program, proudly hosted a groundbreaking training session. The session, titled “Neurocognitive Aspects of Individuals Aged 50 and Older with HIV,” was held at the beautiful Buccaneer Resort and brought together a wide cross-section of community stakeholders committed to improving the lives of individuals aging with HIV.
As HIV care continues to advance, individuals are living longer, healthier lives—ushering in a new and critical area of focus: neurocognitive health and aging. This training explored how HIV affects brain health over time and how early detection, trauma-informed care, and supportive interventions can promote quality of life for older adults.
Participants engaged in interactive discussions and gained insights on:
Neurocognitive changes associated with aging and HIV
Best practices for assessment, screening, and referral
Behavioral health strategies that promote successful aging
Representation included professionals from diverse organizations such as Meeting the Needs of the Community, Golden Grove Medical Unit, Island Therapy Solutions, Frederiksted Health Care Inc., and other NGOs and private entities dedicated to health and wellness in the Virgin Islands.
The synergy in the room reflected a shared mission: to equip local providers with the knowledge and tools necessary to deliver compassionate and informed care to the aging HIV community.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to all participants, facilitators, planning teams, and sponsors who made this event possible. Your commitment to professional development and community wellness contributes to stronger, more informed networks of care across our islands.
Together, we are shaping a future where every individual—regardless of age or HIV status—can thrive.
